Chess in the Library holds seasonal tournaments welcoming everyone to participate in CFC rated games, featured speaker lectures, exciting chess activities, and more. These tournaments have always and will always be free for everyone.

CITL Spring-2023 Markham Village Tournament
The CITL 2022 Fall Tournament was held on June 3rd at Markham Village Library, the second CITL in-person tournament since our return to in-person events! Participants participated in seven rounds over 5 hours in a Swiss tournament.

CITL Fall-2022 Markham Village Tournament
The CITL 2022 Fall Tournament was held on November 12 at Markham Village Library, the first CITL in-person tournament in 3 years after months of online tournaments. Participants participated in eight rounds over 5 hours in a Swiss tournament.

WIth the January 2021 CITL Arena finished, We can say it was a blast and a great way to start the new year off with chess. Thank you very much to the people who showed up!

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, we decided to host virtual chess tournaments on lichess.org. Our first virtual tournament in December, 2020 was a success! Huge thank you to all that participated!
The love for the game should never stop. We will be hosting monthly tournaments on lichess.org. We’re looking forward to having you there!

2019 Annual Festival
The CITL 2019 Annual Festival was held on August 10, 2019, at the Aaniin Community Centre and library.
The event closed off one of Chess in the Library’s busiest years for tournaments, seeing many new faces on the day of. Players were each given 25 + 0 for each game, with the game ending after six rounds. Thank you to everyone who came out to play, as well as to Aaniin Community Centre for offering their wonderful space. Congratulations to our winners!

2019 March Tournament
On March 16th, CITL hosted its March Tournament at Markham Village Public Library! Participants played five rounds during four hours, either in the Intermediate or Advanced sections. Here are the winners from each:

2018 Fall Open
On November 24th, CITL held the 2018 Fall Open at Milliken Mills Library in Markham, Ontario. In both the rated or unrated section, competitors played a total of 5 rounds, with a time control of 25 minutes each. Special thanks to Markham Public Library for providing us with this great venue!
After the games, CITL Founder and Women’s International Master Yuanling Yuan visited the tournament. She gave an amazing talk, answered questions, and even played 20 opponents simultaneously! Thank you once again to our special guest!

2018 Annual Festival
The CITL 2018 Annual Festival was held on August 18, 2018, at Barbara Frum Library.
There were three sections that players could compete in: Grade 4 and Under, Grade 8 and Under, and Open. The sections Grade 4 and Under, and Grade 8 and Under were officially rated by the Chess Federation of Canada.
The event also featured a simultaneous exhibition which put multiple participants against the national master Jason Cai. Participants also had the chance to purchase chess sets and chess books. In addition, a free chess set was given away through raffle tickets. Guess the Number of Queens prompted participants to guess the number of queen pieces in a given box, and the closest guest was awarded a free chess book. The festival concluded with an award ceremony.
