In addition, when using this website’s particular services or participating in Chess in the Library programs, you shall be subject to any posted guidelines or rules applicable to such services, which may be posted and modified from time to time. All such guidelines or rules are hereby incorporated by reference into the Terms of Use.

ANY PARTICIPATION IN THIS SITE OR THE CHESS IN THE LIBRARY PROGRAM WILL CONSTITUTE ACCEPTANCE OF THIS AGREEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO ABIDE BY THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS SITE OR PARTICIPATE IN THE CHESS IN THE LIBRARY PROGRAM.

Disclaimers

1. This site and its features are offered for informational purposes only. Thus, this site shall not be responsible or liable for the accuracy, usefulness or availability of any of any information transmitted or made available via the site, and shall not be responsible or liable for any error or omissions in that information.

2. CITL offers a volunteer-run program at many library branches that promote chess in the community. Although volunteers will on most occasions teach participants how-to play chess if they do not know the rules, they are not obligated to teach advanced chess lessons to participants. Volunteers must tend to managing the program and keep the program environment quiet.

3. We reserve the right to change our policy for the program at the discretion of the executive team.

Program Operation

1. Since the program operates in local libraries, all CITL procedures and practices will follow the regulations of the respective library’s policies. For example, in a CITL session held in Toronto, the program will comply with the policies of the Toronto Public Library. It is your responsibility to check the policy of the library board before participating in any CITL program.

2. We retain the right to refuse participation to CITL programs for reasons including but not limited to: library policies (such as age limitation at certain library boards), program disruption, and gaining unfair advantage at competitions.

3. The chess sets and equipment that CITL offers at its weekly sessions and tournaments are property of CITL.

Tournament Rules

1. The events and tournaments that CITL hosts follow the chess rules set by the Canadian Chess Federation (CFC). The laws of chess, Swiss pairing rules, and Round Robin pairing rules can be found here in the CFC handbook based on the rules set by FIDE.

2. Most CITL tournaments follow the Swiss pairing system and Round Robin. CITL uses a computer pairing system to generate matches. Most tournaments are CFC rated unless stated otherwise. Furthermore, these tournaments are free of admission unless stated otherwise. There are certain tournaments that charge to pool money for the winners, but the cost will be explicitly stated.

3. In cases of a tie for a prize slot, the winner of the prize will be determined by an additional tie-breaker game if time permits in the tournament. Otherwise, a computer generation will be used to determine who receives the prize.

4. Spectators are not allowed in the tournament area during matches. This rule is to prevent unfair advantages to players and to keep the competition area quiet.

5. Event organizers from CITL retain the right to bar individuals from participating at CITL hosted events. Furthermore, organizers retain the right to make reasonable decisions regarding the distribution of prizes in situations not described in the rules above.

For more information regarding our Terms of Use, please contact us at mail.chessinthelibrary@gmail.com.

The Terms of Use is in effect as of July 31, 2015 and is last revised on July 10, 2020 by Henry Chew.

Terms of Use Terms of Use By accessing and using this website or participating in Chess in the Library programs, including but not limited to weekly drop-in sessions, tournaments, and other events, you accept and agree to be bound by the terms and provisions of this agreement.
